As Christmas draws nearer, winter sports come out of hiding for the new season. This includes basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey, swim and dive, wrestling, and bowling.

The JV girls right before the start of the tournament

The bowling team consists of both boys and girls teams, with boys having both a JV A and JV B team.

Some people don’t consider bowling a sport because it isn’t as physical, but that isn’t true. “Bowling is a sport that really anyone can do, and you don’t have to be good at it. If it’s fun to you, that’s what matters.” Lexi Smigiel said.

Smigiel is a senior and is starting her fourth season of bowling for Chippewa. “It’s a really good experience. You form unbreakable bonds with so many different people. I’ll definitely miss my team.”

The three coaches preparing for their first tournament of the season

The first match play, or singles tournament, was Sunday, December 3rd, and they’ve been preparing for it for weeks now. “Practice practice practice. It’s about watching people and spotting mistakes, figuring out what you can improve, and studying your game.” Tre Thomas said. Thomas was asked what you should think about when stepping up to the lane. He simply said “Nothing. You don’t think, you concentrate.”

Maddie Zihlmann on the other hand, isn’t thinking of winning, she’s more interested about the bonds that the team has. “I practice and prepare for competition, but I mostly look forward to making new friends.” Zihlmann said.

The team had a meet against Lakeshore the very next day after school and lost. Not to worry, there’s a whole season ahead of them. Good luck, Big Reds!
