President Trump ordered the U.S. Military, in coordination with Britain and France, to hit Syrian sites where the nation’s chemical weapon arsenal was held in his largest scale military order of his presidency. This military strike comes as a response to Syrian President’s Bashaar Al-Assad use of chemical weapons on civilians in suburbs of country’s capital city, Damascus.

Trump and his advisers during the strike in the White House.

“A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!,” Trump said in a tweet, clearly declaring victory. According to military officials, the three countries fired more than 100 missiles, delivering a blow to the “heart” of Syria’s chemical weapons network.

Syria is still believed to have some remaining chemical weapons capacity, and the US Ambassador to the United Nations made it clear the United States will keep up the pressure on Al-Assad.

“I spoke to the president this morning, and he said, ‘If the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded,’ ” U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said during a UN Security Council meeting.

Additional strikes by the United States and its allies could further tensions with Russia, a strong ally of Syria and Al-Assad. Russia condemned the strikes as violations of international law.  Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the strikes would have “a destructive effect on the entire system of international relations.”

During the Syrian Civil War between the country’s national government, led by Assad and backed by Russia, and rebel groups backed by the United States, the US and Russia have been at odds. President Trump has been very vocal with his opposition towards Russia tweeting, “Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”

This conflict will be one to keep an eye on, and further developments can be expected in the future.
