On April 18, 2018, next year’s Student Council and Student Government officers were announced and history was made. Monét Stewart will be a senior next year and was elected as the first African-American female to be the Student Government President in CVHS history. Stewart has been Student Council President for the past 4 years, but this is her first year as StuGo Pres.

Dr. Davisson, the CVHS Principal for the past 23 years, wasn’t surprised at this announcement. “I’m not surprised that this happened, but I am surprised that this is finally happening. Our school is very diverse and it’s time that we have this happen. Back in the late 90’s, John Myers was the first African-American male to be StuGo President and that was a big deal, just like this here is a big deal. It shows that the students are becoming more open minded and this should be celebrated.”

Stewart, on the other hand, was bit more surprised than Dr. Davisson. “I was so relieved when I found out I won” she admitted. “After finding out that I am the first African-American Female to win this title, I was so proud of myself and felt as if I could accomplish anything I put my mind to.”Monét Stewart hopes to be seen as a role model and set examples for any other minorities that want to speak up. Her advice for anyone who wants to share their voice is to “set your pride aside and don’t be afraid of anything.”

Stewart also has some new ideas for next year’s Student Government. “I have a lot of new ideas for new homecoming decorations and for fundraisers with different companies and just ultimately spread love during my last year as Student Government President.”

Congratulations on this huge accomplishment Monét!!
