March of Dimes is a non-profit organization across the United States that helps to prevent premature births, birth defects, and infant mortality, and is one of the most well-known charities in the country.

To participate in a March of Dimes event is completely free, but a personal donation or fundraising is asked for in order to provide for the cause.

Saturday, May 5, 2017 at 9:00 A.M.(8:00 registration) Traverse City hosted a March of Dimes walk at the Grand Traverse Co Civic Center, with the goal to help improve the health of babies.  This weekend, the Traverse City even reached $35,317 and the number is still rising.

The event this past weekend was a huge success. With an estimation of over 400 people and 18 sponsors (national and local) who participated this weekend, it was a great way to spread awareness for a great cause. The event also had many stations for all the kids to enjoy including arts and crafts, beauty stations, play stations, and more, along with the 3 mile walk from the civic center all the way downtown and back.

Over the years, with the help of events like March of Dimes, and with spreading awareness and fundraising, the rates of premature births has declined to 9.6% today. With this steady decline, more and more healthy babies have been born into the world, along with billions of dollars being saved in excess health care costs.

Although we have this large decline in premature births, there is still an average of 360,000 babies being born premature each year.

March of Dimes is all about making people aware of the campaign they have to stop premature births in hope to continue the decline of premature births occurring each year.
