Tragedy occurred at Dakota High School’s Varsity Hockey team home opener, as then Sophomore Anthony Mastronardi was paralyzed from the waist down playing the game he loves.

To raise money for his medical and rehabilitation costs, a fundraising game was played at Fraser Hockeyland between former Detroit Red Wings players and high school hockey players from around Macomb County. Turnout was high – a near sellout in an arena that seats over 4,000 – and Mastronardi was at the game to drop the opening puck.

“I love seeing everyone supporting me,” Anthony told Local 4 News. “It really is great.”

Mastronardi spent 3 ½ months at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, but is now back at home and undergoing outpatient therapy. Determined to walk again one day, he has not lost sight of his goal.

“I did write something and put it on the wall,” Mastronardi said. “Every day I look at  it. It says, ‘I will walk.’ I look at it and then I go to therapy.”
