After the long process beginning in December 2016, The Michigan School Vocal Music Association choral year came to an end this past weekend at Michigan Youth Arts Festival. At this event, many forms of the arts: Physical, Visual, Vocal and many more fill the festival with mindblowing talent and life changing aspects top everyday life.

The event kicked off Thursday, May 18th with the opening Gala concert through Saturday, May 20th with the grand finale Honors Concert featuring the All-State Honors Choir, Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra. Four of our own at CVHS were present at the festival: Celina Trucano, Jaydenn Knepp, and Jay Callahan sang in the choir while Adam Davis played second chair violin for the orchestra.

“This experience was definitely life changing and quite remarkable,” said Celina. The process begins on Thursday and each group rehearses all day Thursday and Friday to prepare for the concert mid-afternoon Saturday. The highlight piece of the choir was Across The Vast Eternal Sky by Ola Gjeilo. It speaks the mind of an alternate universe with crunch chords blended together and perfect harmony at the final beat. The Honors Choir was composed of over 150 singers singing 4 different voice parts and 7 intense pieces of repertoire. The guest conductor of the event was Emily Ellsworth who originates from Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. With creative knowledge like hers, she composed “One of the best All-State choirs known.” The reality of it is that no matter the outcome of the choir, its 150 strangers from across the state coming together to make music and change the lives of others through the power of music withing 3 short days.

Michigan Youth Arts opened up the souls to how the arts are important for our future. Speaking on behalf of the choir, I will forever cherish this moment and The Bartered Bride: Arranged by Emily Ellsworth

forever be grateful to have been apart of this once in a lifetime experience with the best of the best.
