Team 55 is composed of  junior and senior student-athletes that work hard each and every day after school practicing for the game on Friday night. This years team has done extremely well this season. Starting 6-1 with two games left,  everyone is confident in their Big Reds and are looking forward to the playoffs.

The team’s success has not only come from the seniors, but juniors as well. Vince Buccilli, a senior and returning player, said that it is not just the seniors that are helping to this season’s hot start, “It’s all the guys that came back that have also helped us to win such as Marcel Lewis, David Ellis, Javon Kimpson, Tommy Schuster. Really everyone has played key roles as well.”

The varsity team this year has done very well on all three sides of the ball. Coach Scott Merchant said that the team gets better every week. “We played okay the first game against Lake Orion.” The Big Reds secured the win towards the end of the game with a big interception by senior defensive back, Brian Nadius. “We make fewer mistakes each week and we keep getting better,” Merchant said. “We really stepped up against Utica and Dakota.” At the end of last season, many people knew that the team was

going to do much better this season. Preparing for it wasn’t any different than any other season. “We knew that we were going to be good this year. We have tons of guys that came back from last year and no sophomores or younger guys,” Merchant replied.

When Buccilli was asked of his expectations going forward, he replied, “To win in the playoffs because of past experiences.” Last season, Chippewa went to the playoffs but lost in the first round to their rival, Dakota, the game ending in 27-48.  Everyone is looking forward to the last two games of the regular season: Stevenson at 2-5 on October 13, and Anchor Bay at 5-2 on October 20.
